[...] Jimmy Wales was very slick with his presentation. He spoke about Wikipedia/Wikia (the company that does everything else), the popularity, access by internet users, accuracy and the way that wikipedia should be used (e.g. as a reference tool to jump start further research, not as a primary reference). There is a good blog that goes into more detail into the content of his presentation: http://gwegner.edublogs.org/2007/04/23/educationau-jimmy-wales-seminar/ [...]

As Jimmy pointed out in his talk, when you consider where
Wikipedia sits above CNN and the BBC in terms how often their site is referenced on a daily basis, his site is rapidly becoming mainstream media. My table agreed that for 95% of primary school educators, Wikipedia is the closest they'd ever come to a wiki, and where do they get their facts about Wikipedia and peer produced knowledge - the mainstream media, running scared as you demonstrate in your link, looking to discredit anything that undermines their long held position of authority. You are right though - we heard a lot about Wikipedia and pedias in general but nothing really on wikis and the process of wikiing - which is where the real power to the people resides.

Hi Graham,

I'll drop this one in before your kitchen lights go down. :-)

I'd blog about Jimmy if he'd had any sense to say hello to the educators using his endorsed product.

Fact is I think MediaWiki, WikiVersity and all the other tricky dickys work well however we are yet to see them fully embraced by the education sector who cant get their head around the fact that he was a porn developer according to these scare mongerer's - http://sunday.ninemsn.com.au/sunday/feature_stories/article_2167.asp

I'm frightened Graham. Dont be evil ?

Sheesh...the worlds warped. I like the WikiVersity's motto.

"Please help Wikiversity finally decide its motto and slogan." I reckon they should keep it exactly as it reads.

Then no one can complain or be shocked by what kids in university would really like it to read :-)
